Security Council

The United Nations Security Council is one of the six major UN bodies that are charged with the overarching responsibility for the promotion and maintenance of international peace and security. The organ is a committee of fifteen member nations, of whom five are permanently represented (USA, United Kingdom, France, Russia Federation, and China), who have the power of veto on resolutions/decisions. The committee is known for its specialized and fast-paced procedure for addressing international crises that include but are not limited to conflict and violence, sanctions, peacekeeping missions, and threats to international security. Because of the level of intensity and complexity involved, the United Nations Security Council demands very advanced skills for the diplomats who are involved in organizing and conducting the procedures and affairs of the UN body.

يُعدّ مجلس الأمن أحد الأجهزة الستة الرئيسية للأمم المتحدة، ويتحمّل المسؤولية الأساسية عن حفظ السلم والأمن الدوليين. وهو لجنة عالية المستوى تتكوّن من خمسة عشر دولة عضواً، من بينها خمسة أعضاء دائمين (الولايات المتحدة، المملكة المتحدة، فرنسا، روسيا، والصين) يتمتّعون بحق النقض (الفيتو) على القرارات الجوهرية. يعمل المجلس وفق إجراءات خاصة وسريعة الوتيرة، حيث يتعامل مع أزمات دولية آنية مثل النزاعات المسلحة، العقوبات، عمليات حفظ السلام، والتهديدات للأمن العالمي. يُطلب من المندوبين صياغة توجيهات، والتفاوض حول وقف إطلاق النار، والموافقة على التدخلات، والاستجابة للتطورات المتسارعة. وبسبب طبيعته المعقّدة والمكثّفة، يتطلّب مجلس الأمن مهارات دبلوماسية متقدمة، وتفكيراً استراتيجياً، وفهماً عميقاً للعلاقات الدولية.
